Personal Statement

I became interested in second language learning and how heritage languages are learnt and maintained when I was teaching English to Afghan Mujahedeen in Peshawar. My work with migrants to the UK further developed my interest in language learning for use in work environments. For my PhD I am inquiring into learner perceptions of progress for ESOL (English as a Second or Other Language) learners on vocational programmes. My research interests also include migrant identity and the teaching of right to left scripts.

I have also managed and taught on English as a Second Language as well as bilingual programmes in the UK and in Pakistan. I have edited a bilingual journal, Urdutimesuk, and deliver training for CILT (The National Centre for Languages) and Natecla (National Association for Teachers of English and Other Languages). An accreditation scheme I developed to record learners' achievements in literacy in their first language won the European Award for Languages.

Outside work, I enjoy local history, making soft furnishings and going to the theatre.

Naeema is fully qualified to teach English as a Foreign Language in accordance with the British Council's TEFLQ standard.
