Steve Cockerill

Steve Cockerill is Senior Lecturer in Action Research; Reflective Practice and Critical Systems Thinking. He was born in Leeds and apart from studying elsewhere during the 60s and being a freelance systems designer for several years; he has spent much of his life based in his home town.

He has sung with jazz, blues and soul bands and is a founder member of one of the most spirited acoustic clubs Unplugged Leeds; runs a blues venue Stormy Monday; and has organised benefit gigs for various charities based in the majority world such as Ethiopia.

That apart, he considers himself to be a teacher first and foremost and consequently has been involved in pedagogic development ever since the late 70s when he began his teaching career. He has led various initiatives at Leeds Metropolitan University such as open and distance learning; the case approach to teaching; problem based learning; critical thinking and is now focusing upon personal, academic and professional development for peace and development.

He is concerned to help students become critically reflective people, sensitive to the wide cultural diversity in the global context and so he is taking a significant interest in developing students using transformative learning to increase their ethical awareness. Consequently was recently invited to do a presentation of his planned new modules for Peace and Development at a conference on Global Citizenship and Sustainable Development.
