Why did you choose to study at Leeds Met?
I chose to study in the UK because of the challenging research courses offered in this country that could help me to grow in my profession as an engineer. Obtaining a degree in the UK really helps advance a career in India.

I had many friends who came to Leeds Met from India. After completing their course here they recommended the University to me. They all felt the courses they took were outstanding and there was an excellent faculty to support them. I was in no doubt after hearing this that I wanted to come to Leeds Met. Also, Marketing is a flourishing industry in India and a degree from Leeds Met will assure a place at an engineering company dealing with marketing.

I received help with applying from an agent called Campus International based in Cochin, Kerala. They helped me in filling the form and mailing my application. My friend recommended them to me and they really did help me from beginning to end to ensure I secured a place at Leeds Met.

The Scholarship
I already have a degree in engineering from a university in India. So, between my academic achievements, enthusiasm for sports, cultural interests and voluntary and paid-work achievements I felt I may just have the right criteria to win a scholarship.

To attain the scholarship I had to write an essay and also submit all of my achievements; academic, cultural, voluntary work, previously held jobs and sports involvement. To give an example; I have entered in spelling and singing contests, donated blood, worked in an engineering company, competed in a 100metre and 200metre race, and avidly play cricket, football, badminton, shot-put and discus.

When I found out I had won the scholarship it felt great. Even though I thought I was a suitable candidate, I really never expected it. I was ecstatic!

The scholarship means a lot to me. It has already helped to cut my fees by 25%. Attaining this scholarship also means that I have a higher success rate of achieving my dream job because company’s look for high achievers.

My family are very proud of me also. This scholarship was meant for five candidates only, so they felt it was a great honour that I won.

What do you think of Leeds Met?
Leeds Met is a great university! It has wonderful facilities including sports, a job shop to help you find work, a student union to meet and socialise with fellow students, a great library where you can find any study materials, and a beautiful campus! Leeds Met is also the greenest University in the UK. All around, it’s a wonderful place to study!

The welcome programme was great! This programme really helped me to settle in to the university and helped me to understand the culture here. It was wonderful to be introduced to all the different facilities such as the job shop, sports centre, library and students’ union. The free trip to York and the rugby match were two wonderful added bonuses offered by Leeds Met and offered great insight into England’s history and sporting games. Freshers’ festival helps all the new students to attain a feel for the University and culture in the UK. It also helps them to mingle and interact with students from other countries. I really made some great new friends thanks to the freshers’ festival!

Accommodation in the UK is great! The rooms are fully furnished with an equipped kitchen, bedroom, storerooms and bathrooms. The price of accommodation in Leeds is also relatively in-expensive!

The city of Leeds
Leeds is a wonderful city! The cost of living is much less than in other areas of the country. It is also a very student oriented city and there is no risk in commuting to other areas even in the evening.

The Course
I am taking my masters in marketing, which is an industry highly influenced by consumers. If a company doesn’t know what a customer wants then marketing becomes in-effective. Marketing has great opportunities in India.

I think the most positive experience I’ve had since I’ve been here is the wonderful lecture-student relationship. The lecturers are so co-operative and welcome any thoughts and opinions from students. This is a totally new and positive experience to me.

A degree from Leeds Met will greatly enhance my career prospects because it will have credibility world-wide.
