Thursday 11 May 2006

Leeds Met celebrated the launch of Leeds Met Africa, with a range of performances, screenings and presentations taking place at Headingley Campus and Civic Quarter on Thursday 11 May 2006.

Headingley Campus

The Leeds Seventh Day Adventist Choir opened the launch event at Headingley Campus, singing three traditional African songs on the steps of the James Graham Building and then again inside lecture theatre B to delegates who sang along.

The Right Honourable Paul Boateng, High Commissioner to South Africa, followed the choir with his speech 'Beyond Rhetoric: Making the Millennium Development Goals a Reality, the Changing Social, Political and Economic Landscape in Africa', in which he spoke about the importance of partnerships and their ability to unlock potential. Closing his speech, Mr Boateng praised the partnership with Leeds Met, commenting on it being life enhancing and life changing, and asked the audience to shout out along with him 'Viva Leeds Met'!

The launch continued with a talk on 'Public Health Education in Zambia' and a preview screening of 'AmaZulu: the Children of Heaven', a film produced by Leeds Met's Northern Film School Foundation in collaboration with the Rainbow Collective, a new production company formed by graduates of the university's School of Film, Television & Performing Arts.

Celebrations overflowed into the evening with guests enjoying African food, culture, music and dance.

Civic Quarter

As part of the celebrations marking the launch of Leeds Met Africa, Lamin Jassey and his African drumming group Woolaba performed in the Lower Concourse of the Civic Quarter while students and staff enjoyed the sunshine flowing in through the open doors. View images from the event.
