Sport can help break down barriers and build understanding between people, their cultures and religions. It can promote community integration, healthy living and personal development. These are precisely the aims of the British Asian Rugby Association (BARA) and the main reason why we have chosen to sponsor their participation in the All India and South Asia rugby Union tournament in India next week. Accompanying staff visits will also extend our connections with schools, colleges and organisations in the sub-continent, and with our Leeds Met South Asia facility help promote our Carnegie range of courses in India for the first time.
BARA is the brainchild of Ikram Butt, a Leeds Met graduate and one of the first Asian rugby players to represent England. The BARA team comprises players from different faith backgrounds, whose origins are in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Three of the back-up squad are current Leeds Met students. Wearing Britain’s colours and sporting University branding, the team will go into the tournament confident of progressing to the later stages. Bringing the winner’s trophy back to Leeds would be not only a team triumph but an inspiration to unite communities and build bridges to last into the future.
