Andrew Heiskell Award
Leeds Met rewarded for Innovation in International Education
Leeds Metropolitan University has been rewarded for its innovative work in International Education by a leading US educational institute.
The Institute of International Education (IIE) has awarded the University an honourable mention in its Andrew Heiskell Awards for Innovation in International Education in the 'Internationalising the Campus' category. The awards promote and honour the most outstanding initiatives that are being conducted in international higher education across the globe.
Leeds Met has made a serious commitment to internationalisation for several years, and in 2003 initiated an institution-wide project to review all curricula against guidelines on cross-cultural capability and global perspectives. This unique commitment fits within a broad Internationalisation Strategy, designed to develop world-wide horizons at Leeds Met. While many international strategies focus on recruiting students from overseas, Leeds Met takes a holistic and values-driven approach to internationalisation, which is integrated with all aspects of university life.
Initiatives such as university-supported international volunteering, cultural festivals, international exchanges, field trips and work placements are expanding to provide real opportunities to develop graduate attributes at Leeds Met which are commensurate with living as a global citizen.
Elspeth Jones, Dean of the Leslie Silver International Faculty at Leeds Met, says, “Leeds Met is delighted to have been recognised for its innovative work on campus internationalisation through the IIE Andrew Heiskell Awards. As the only UK University ever to have won an award in this annual recognition of best practice, we are proud to see our efforts to develop world-wide horizons acknowledged in this way. We are particularly proud to be recognised through this award from the United States, a country very committed to campus internationalisation in its own higher education system.”
