The Student Wiki was established during the academic year 2006-2007. The development team included volunteer students who led the design and testing of the site. It was officially launched in February 2007 and featured on the University's undergraduate prospectus. The launch party held at Millennium Square on the ice rink was heavily influenced by student volunteers. PR students helped to organise and publicise the event and some student ice hockey players took to the ice to demonstrate their skills.

The Student Wiki was designed with the view to provide a space for students to interact and exchange knowledge in real time on issues of their choosing, in a number of different formats. This initiative has been grabbed by some of those users and developed even further by others. Student societies, cooking recipes and travelling experiences are just some of the articles available to read and edit on the Wiki.
