Professor Colin Pattinson

Professor Colin Pattinson

Running Stream Professor of Mobile and Converging Technologies, Colin has been active in research in computer network management and performance measurement for most of his career at Leeds Met. He is particularly interested in the development of simulation-based network management training systems, which are currently used by students on his courses. His current research interests centre on performance and security issues in mobile networks, and he is developing work in environmental impact of the manufacture; use and disposal of computing technologies.

Profile

Colin Pattinson was appointed to the post of Running Stream Professor of Mobile and Converging Technologies in October 2006. Colin leads the Centre for Mobile & Converging Technologies, which encompasses research conducted by members of staff internal and external to the Faculty.

Beginning with his PhD research, Colin has pursued an interest in understanding the performance and behaviour of computer communications networks, reflecting his belief that networked systems must be fully understood if they are to be effectively controlled and operated. From this background, he developed a research interest in the management of computer networks, recognising that this management requires clear and accurate information about the networks being managed.

A long-standing involvement in the Innovation North Faculty's post-graduate Mobile and Distributed Computer Networks award, and a recognition that students required hands-on experience of network management systems led to the creation of a network management training system, which was presented at CeBit, Hannover, Germany in 2003, as part of the Yorkshire Forward stand, this was also the subject of a Computer Weekly report. The work involved in this was also the subject of published papers, and in turn this has developed into an interest in modelling the "footprint" of network attacks, so that students can use the system to explore their reaction to a range of attacks.

Colin's long-term commitment to the support of teaching by the use of current research (both his own and that of others) has meant he has played a major role in the development and redevelopment of curriculum and undergraduate and post graduate levels, as well as supervising research students across three continents (in addition to his Leeds-based students, he is currently supervising, by distance learning, students in Bosnia, Austria and Dubai). A part of Colin's interpretation of the concept of a "running stream" means that 5 of his current supervisions are students who have, in the past, worked with Colin on the MSc award, and have decided  to return to further their studies.

A more recent research interest, which Colin hopes to develop as part of his professorship, is the environmental impact of computing and IT systems, and a wish to develop an awareness of the means by which the production, use and disposal of IT can be made more environmentally friendly. This was the subject of a talk given at the 2006 Innovation North Research Conference, and as part of the
Institute of Northern Studies summer program for 2007.
