Upstream
Upstream are a mobile solutions communications group who have developed an online learning environment.
Chris Hall explained, 'The problem that we discovered was that in Africa there are plenty of charities working in schools and hospitals with very little or no IT framework. Taking Open Source software as a solution, the team found an American company that recycles and re-formats pen drives. Our idea is to take the pen drive to different educational institutions, which can transport a computer operating system which can be used on any computer.
The drive is split into two different separate operating systems, the first being Ubuntu, the open source Linux and the second being the storage for your files. Using the wireless network connection, the operating system can be updated using a network that taps into the software and adds any updates necessary wherever you are.
Marketing the product to government, business and education was the obvious development.,who could distribute it to charities in Africa to help improve the lives of the people there. It's a fledgling idea, which, with the right channelling, could certainly develop into a bigger business.'
This is definitely a project pushing the boundaries for the future use of computers and their operating systems. To find out more about the project you can go to http://www.up-stream.co.uk or get in touch directly with the team at admin@up-stream.co.uk.
