Innovation Showcase Guest Lectures

08 May 2008

As part of the Innovation North's Showcase week we were pleased to host a series of special guest lectures for students and staff.

Elliott Randell
'Q&A'
Students had the chance to get first-hand advice from a true music industry professional. This session was an informal Q&A allowing students to discuss their future plans, experiences and ask Elliott anything that will benefit them in the future.

Ian Bowden - Art Director, Rockstar Leeds
'War Stories'
This lecture reflected on his 15 year career in the games industry. He shared first-hand advice on how to get into the industry and highlighted the benefits higher education can bring to career prospects.

Linda Broughton - Head, New Technology Institute, Leeds
Linda talked about the nti's role and what it's like to work there.

Francesca Fulthorpe - Jigsaw Computers
Francesca demonstrated some of Apple's Pro Applications features and toolsets alongside it's close integration with Apple hardware. Apple's pro application suite of software includes Final Cut Pro, Motion, Soundtrack Pro & DVD Studio Pro.

Tony Bryant - Professor of Informatics, Leeds Met
'Mothers & Others of Invention'
People usually think of inventors as almost exclusively male, middle-aged and white; yet there are numerous examples of inventors who do not fall into this category for all or any of the three criteria. Tony explained to studentrs and staff ideas about invention and innovation, with examples of some of these 'mothers and others'

Martin Belderson - Director, Four Winds Productions
'From BBC in a Jam to Digital Sharkfighting'
Two years ago, Martin Belderson started work directing an interactive online drama for the BBC's ill-fated Digital Jam project for schools. It was a fascinating experience for him, a disastrous experiment for the BBC, and a very steep learning curve for everyone involved. Martin will be talking about the experience - discussing the advantages and disadvantages of working for large organisations and the transition to small scale productions on YouTube.
