Disability Research Conference

The disability research group is planning a one day conference, to be held on April 16 2008 at Headingley Carnegie stadium. The day will start with an introduction from Mike Adams, our Visiting Professor in Inclusive Learning and will move on to a series of short showcases from colleagues at Leeds Met and round table discussion sessions. We also have 2 key note speakers, Professor Alan Hurst from UCLAN and Helen Smith and other colleagues from Leeds Metropolitan University.

As well as giving colleagues the opportunity to showcase their work, the conference will provide an excellent opportunity to become familiar with some of the disability research that is going on at Leeds Met. The rationale of the disability research group is grounded in (i) The wide and varied student population at Leeds Met. (ii) The large staff at Leeds Met. (iii) Collaboration possibilities: joint papers can be written and funding bids made. Previous meetings of the group have revealed a wide range of research interests, for example disabled students in higher education, young people with disabilities and hospital patients. All this suggests that the conference will be very interesting and productive.

We are planning for around 13 showcases - a 10 minute presentation and 5 minutes for questions, and have now finalised the programme.

The presentations will address the following themes:

  • Student life cycle: raising aspirations -> studying -> subsequent working life.
  • Assessment, learning and teaching
  • Widening participation
  • Disability pedagogy
  • Assistive technology

The presentations of the day are now available as a Pdf document (8Mb).
