Speech and Language Therapy

THE PROFESSION

Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) is a scientific profession. Therapists work with people who have a range of communication difficulties. Children with problems learning to talk and adults who have lost their ability to communicate through accident or illness, as well as those with feeding and swallowing disorders, feature in a clinician's caseload. Clinicians work with individuals and groups and advise carers and other members of staff on communication matters. Speech and language therapists work in nurseries and schools, hospitals, health centres and sometimes visit clients in their own homes.

SPEECH & LANGUAGE THERAPIST EDUCATION AT LEEDS MET

There has been a course offering speech and language therapy education at Leeds Met since 1965. The BSc (Hons) Clinical Language Sciences (Speech & Language Therapy) leads to a professional qualification in speech and language therapy. After completion of your studies, normally within a three year period, you are eligible to register with the Health Professions Council (HPC) as a speech and language therapist. The teaching and learning on the course draw on a wide range of disciplines including the study of linguistics, phonetics, medical sciences, psychology and disorders of speech and language. A large practical component with a variety of work experiences alongside qualified therapists enables students to put theory into practice. UK residents are normally entitled to free tuition. This course is exempt from the withdrawal of funding for ELQ students. Even if you already hold a first degree, your fees are normally funded by the NHS.
