Public Health, Safety & Environment
The work of the Public Health Safety and Environment Group focuses on Environmental Health, Health and Safety, and Acoustics.
Our courses are designed to develop practitioners who are able to solve complex problems within the workplace or in the wider community, and to promote safety, health and wellbeing. Areas studied include: environmental protection; food safety; health and safety; housing and public health. All our practitioner courses are accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, or the Institute of Acoustics as meeting the academic requirements for practitioner status. Consequently, our graduates have very good employment prospects within the Private and Local Government sectors, and may also have the opportunity to become self-employed consultants. As well as developing technical knowledge within the relevant area, our courses are also designed to develop the interpersonal skills required for careers that will involve meeting people, listening, offering support and advice, negotiation and if necessary taking enforcement action.
Members of the Group are also active in external work. We provide professional development courses and consultancy, particularly in the area of Acoustics and Noise Control and Health and Safety. We have recently appointed a Project Officer to support the work in the Acoustics area, and more information about this work can be found by following the link below.
