Postgraduate and professional study at Leeds Metropolitan

Learning Spaces

We will be moving into new facilities in July 2012 to ensure our students experience the highest quality in the teaching and practice of clinical skills.

The new facilities – based at our city centre Portland building – will cost around £1m and will be used in the study areas of Nursing, Physiotherapy, Sports Therapy, Nutrition and Dietetics, and Occupational Therapy. These facilities will be fitted-out with all the latest equipment to help us deliver courses which reflect contemporary and future practice in domestic, primary and secondary clinical environments.

Among our new teaching and practice areas is a simulation suite that includes theatre-style lighting, critical care bed, hospital ward fixtures and fittings, crash trollies, and a high-tech simulation mannequin with multi-task support software to replicate clinical situations. The suite will also offer a video recording and playback system for feedback and assessment, a one-way mirrored viewing room, a control room for our staff to oversee activity in the simulation room and an open plan studio flat.

Leadership

Health & Social Sciences Dean
Welcome to the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences. We aim to become the provider of choice for vocational and academic knowledge in Health and Social Sciences through innovation, applied research and pioneering partnerships.

We offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses - 62 in total - which are managed through four Schools that place our 6,000 students at the heart of delivering a world class education. We take great pride in knowing 94 per cent of students who have completed professional courses are employed or in further study.

Our students are supported by 350 members of academic and administrative staff, all located at the University’s City Campus, dedicated to the delivery of a high quality student experience.

The research programmes in our Faculty are primarily undertaken through the recently founded Research Institute for Health and Wellbeing, encompassing a range of related subjects and other areas of specialism such as Psychology.

Placements

The Practice Learning and Employability Unit provides a central focus for advice and communication within the Faculty in relation to practice learning and to enable close partnership with other HEIs, Yorkshire & the Humber SHA and local practice educators.

What we aim to achieve is a better understanding of the processes and mechanisms supporting practice learning in order to facilitate the development of seamless placement strategy across the Faculty along with our external partners, to ensure the adoption of best practice.

We provide support and guidance for groups who are developing practice placement partnerships with new and emerging employers, agencies and sponsoring organisations, in order to maximise the learning opportunities across a range of professions.

We map placement timings, practice educator courses, key contacts and structures across local Trusts and agencies to benefit planning processes and inter professional initiatives.
