Community Project

The selected community project, The Self-help Group for Cerebral Palsy Nepal (SGCP) will involve team members participating in a meaningful, challenging and rewarding experience leaving them with a long-lasting beneficial relationship with our overseas community partners and the knowledge that they helped make a difference.

Cerebral palsy is non-contagious condition that causes physical  disability in human development. Cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the motor control centres of the developing brain and can occur during pregnancy, during childbirth or after birth up to about age three.

Cerebral Palsy is very common in Nepal due to; Poor medical facilities, widespread illiteracy and a lack of proper nutrition and care of mothers.

The Cerebral Palsy situation in Nepal is a genuine case of "hidden catastrophe" as little is done at the national level for its prevention and for the rehabilitation of children with it.

Self-help Group for Cerebral Palsy (SGCP), which is popularly known as CP- Centre, is a non-governmental and non-profit organisation established 21 years ago in Kathmandu, Nepal, is serving children with cerebral palsy. The main objective of the organisation is to provide care, comfort and relief to the children and adults with Cerebral Palsy through various interventions.

In line with its objective SGCP runs a rehabilitation centre and special education programme as well as home based support programme to children with cerebral palsy and their parents.

The Cerebral Palsy Rehabilitation Centre of SGCP is located in the Kathmandu valley and provides counselling services, therapeutic services, medical services, training of parents as well as training of field workers from various organizations in the  field of rehabilitation of children with Cerebral Palsy.

SGCP Nepal reaches over 800 cases annually through home visits, but many of the children of Nepal live in poor rural areas, and are unable to travel to the rehabilitation centre. This is the 'tip of iceberg' - SGCP estimates a total of 80,000 cases or more in Nepal.

We will raise £20,000+ towards supporting the SGCP outreach work and to provide additional resources.

Whilst out in Nepal the team will be involved in landscaping and decorating the new vocational workshop, enabling older children to develop practical life skills.

If you are inspired by the work that Self-help Group for Cerebral Palsy (SGCP) does for the Nepalese community and want to help our team make a difference to children with Cerebral Palsy's lives, please make a donation today.
