The People in Public Health study is being undertaken to improve our understanding of approaches to support lay people in public health roles. We want to find out about the different ways people are involved and what health services can do to recruit, develop and support them. We also want to find out the views of community members with experience of public health services delivered or led by lay people.

In Phase 1 of the study we will carry out a Literature Review on the range of roles and types of approaches in use. We will explore some of the issues further in Expert Hearings. Phase 1 will end with site visits to different types of projects in England.

Phase 2 will involve a small number of Case Studies of projects involving lay people. We will interview professionals, community members active in the projects and service users.

The aim of People in Public Health is to find out about different approaches and we hope that the study will result in shared learning and better dissemination of good

practice. We will eventually establish a searchable online database of published research, projects and contacts in England.

‘People in Public Health: A study of approaches to develop and support lay people in public health roles’, is independent research commissioned by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Service Delivery and Organisation (SDO) Programme. This research programme is funded by the Department of Health.
