Professor Richard Hogston - Dean

Professor Richard Hogston

Professor Richard Hogston took up post as Dean of the Faculty of Health in August 2006 having previously been an associate dean for two years. He is an experienced academic nurse executive leader with proven successes at a national and local level in education, policy and management of change.  Richard joined Leeds Met from Hull University, where he successfully led the Faculty of Health and Social Care through the first QAA/DoH major review of nursing and midwifery. The outcome

to that review was extremely positive and Richard brought thatexperience with him to Leeds Met where he led the major review in summer 2005 at which the Faculty was awarded the highest judgements.

Richard leads the University’s voice on key NHS forums and recently, in May 2008 he helped secure NHS Yorkshire and the Humber to launch at Leeds Met by the Health Minister Lord Darzi their contribution to the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the NHS.  Richard is Chair of the Cross Leeds Education Partnership Forum and on the governing body of the Leeds Partnership Foundation NHS Trust.

Richard has a range of publications in professional and academic journals and his third edition of the best selling edited textbook Foundations of Nursing Practice – Leading the Way includes a sole authored chapter (and is to shortly be published in Spanish). Richard is on the editorial board of the Journal of Nursing Management.

Richard was formerly Nursing Officer for Education and Training at the Department of Health during the development of the Nursing Strategy, “Making a Difference” and was one of the four UK government health departments’ representative on the UKCC education Commission, chaired by Sir Len Peach. He was also responsible for establishing a relationship with the Quality Assurance Agency leading to the work on benchmarking. Prior to moving North Richard had a number of clinical and teaching posts in Portsmouth, Hampshire.
