The LTU web site is currently being restructured and this will take a little time to complete. There are several reasons for the change. Here are a few;
We now aim to produce all pages using valid HTML and CSS. This is the reason for the icons at the bottom of each page. They allow all users to verify their validity. Much of the web is created with invalid HTML and CSS and the authors are unaware of it because their pages look O.K. on their own computers. However, invalid pages can appear mangled for some people. People with disabilities who use special equipment for accessing web pages are most likely to have problems with invalid pages.
LTU has made this commitment because we advise all teachers who create web pages for their students to validate their pages and of course we must practice what we preach.
- We now process every page of information to produce three versions for use by different users with different needs and preferences. Users can switch between these versions using the links at the very top of every page. The first version follows the standard University look and feel - however, we feel that this design is unsuitable for a number of users and so we provide two more versions of each page. The second version is adapted for people who have very small screens, in particular users of handheld computers, iPhones and web enabled PDAs but also users who have normal sized screens that are adapted to magnify and can only display small amounts of text at a time. In this version graphics are used but all content is arranged in a single column which wraps to the full width of the screen. The third version is adapted for users who need voice synthesis to access web pages. This version also puts the information in a linear structure and puts text descriptions in place of the graphics. For example putting the word "to" in the location trail instead of using an angled bracket as a kind of arrow.
- The content of the LTU web site has been restructured to better reflect our activities and the full range of TEL options open to our colleagues in the faculty. Please be patient as we work on putting content into this new structure and our apologies if you are looking for information that has moved and you can't instantly locate it. If you have any difficulties please contact Jon Maber.
- We are strongly motivated to remove the navigational barriers between public pages and pages that are private to members of the university. Previously LTU maintained two totally separate web sites and users often found themselves searching both for the required information. Now we have a single home page and a single navigation system but still keep some pages private - these are clearly indicated with a padlock icon next to the links.
- The new web site uses a content management system which will better allow us to work as a team on the pages and to track edits etc. When the university next revamps its colour schemes and layout we will now be able to respond much quicker and change our page appearance and layout to match.
