Staff Development Festival Day, 2006

The day was opened with a presentation by Professor Simon Lee and Professor Richard Hogston. This was followed by a selection of various workshops which gave staff the unique opportunity to take part in events that are innovative and challenging, from designing their own plaster tiles with Iris Wilkinson to creating artistic collages and discovering the ‘Art of Living’ with Sue Dominey.

Guest speaker Kate Hull Rodgers was a huge hit with her Humour in the Workplace workshop, this taught staff how to improve their ability to laugh, which had them rolling in the aisles. Admingle sessions with Shirley Frances Clark required staff to take the roles of sheep or shepherds focusing on the idea of ‘doing your job better to make your life easier!’

Staff were pampered in the complementary therapies suites, with taster sessions of Indian Head Massage, Thai Foot Reflexology and Thai Yoga Massage. Ling Li held sessions on the prevention of RSI. Other workshops included how to balance work, life and wellbeing, the importance of physical activity in the workplace, the challenges of managing change and cross cultural capability. The day came to a close with a relaxing session of Tai Chi which was greatly appreciated.

Participants said “this was a very positive day, it was a great idea and very amusing”. “The emphasis was on fun, today was much better than previous years”.
The consensus of the day was that staff were given a learning experience and the chance to build relationships with colleagues whom they wouldn’t ordinarily meet in day–to–day operations. This was a day for staff to share ideas and simply enjoy themselves.

A special thank you was given to the events organiser, Rachel Jackson, whom made the day a great success.
