What's it all about?

During the 2011 festival season, over 200 students, staff and alumni volunteered at Hove, Latitude and Leeds Festivals through the University's partnership with Festival Republic.

Volunteers worked on a variety of projects, including stage management, filming, runniLatitude Festival Welcome imageng campsite DJ parties, performing and providing information to festival-goers.

In addition, a handful of students were lucky enough to work as interns with Festival Republic, one of their contractors or with our staff team on-site. These are really hard-to-find placements, enabling Leeds Metropolitan students and alumni to be one step ahead of the competition, as well as providing an excellent work experience opportunity.

The festival placements tie in to a wide range of courses and enable some students to gain credit for the work they do, as well as making vital contacts and learning more about the festival industry.

Leeds Metropolitan University has been working in partnership with Festival Republic (organisers of Leeds and Reading Festivals, Latitude Festival, Hove Festival in Norway and operational management for Glastonbury Festival) since 2007, providing exciting opportunities for students and staff to develop experience and skills in a festival setting, contributing significantly to the work of Festival Republic and enhancing research in festivals and creative performance.

Lucy McCann is an Events Management alumnus from Leeds Met, who worked for Festival Republic this year at Latitude as Artist Liaison.

From working previously at Latitude with our university, she made important contacts and kept in touch with her supervisor at the time. As a result of this she was offered paid work this year. She comments that "networking and staying in touch with people is vital for a career in the music industry."
