As well as three music stages, Latitude Festival features comedy, cabaret, theatre, literature, poetry, art, film and dance tents. It is set in beautiful surroundings around a lake and woods in Henham Park, in the Suffolk countryside. Visit the festival website for more general information.


Dates: You will need to be available from Tuesday 10th to Monday 16th July inclusive. You will need to be available from Tuesday 10th to Monday 16th July inclusive.

Transport: Return transport from Leeds to Henham Park will be provided free of charge.

Food: Some meal vouchers will be provided during the festival but you may also wish to bring food with you.

Accommodation: You will be in a staff campsite and you will need to bring a tent or arrange to share with another volunteer.
All volunteers will be required to pay a refundable deposit of £180 to secure their place and agree to the volunteer agreement.

The descriptions below are to help you decide which role you would like to apply for. They are intended to give an idea of what the role will involve, but are not a guaranteed or exhaustive list. All volunteers will be expected to make the most of their experience by helping out wherever needed and appropriate. You will be supported on-site by Leeds Met staff.

Lake Stage

The Lake Stage is run in association with BBC Introducing to give up-and-coming bands and solo musicians a chance to perform at a major UK festival. Performances are recorded and broadcast on BBC national and/or local radio.

Volunteers on the Lake Stage will work with a Stage Manager and crew employed by Festival Republic.

Working hours: Between 9am and 9pm (breaks to be arranged within team).

Stage Manager
Ensure smooth running of the stage to time schedule together with Production Manager, oversee bands' arrival and artist liaison, chase up any late bands and liaise with stage security.
Skills and personal attributes: Leadership, communication, working well under pressure, time management

Production Manager
Ensure smooth running of the stage to time schedule together with Stage Manager, oversee organisation of backstage area and stage crew, liaise with sound and lighting engineers, and stage security.
Skills and personal attributes: Organisation, communication, working well under pressure, time management. Some technical knowledge of stage setup would be an advantage.

Artist Liaison (two positions)
Meet bands as they arrive and look after them, introduce bands to Stage Crew to show them where to put their instruments / equipment.
Skills and personal attributes: Communication, working well under pressure, people skills. An interest in unsigned bands and new music would be an advantage.

Stage Crew (two positions)
Organise backstage area and show bands where to put their instruments / equipment, help bands on and off stage if required. May have opportunity to assist sound and lighting engineers.
Skills and personal attributes: Organisation, attention to detail, people skills. Some technical knowledge would be an advantage.

Film Crew

The film crew will be given a brief to produce one or more short films at the festival. Filming will focus on the Lake Stage but also cover other volunteers at the festival and some general footage.

Working hours: Various - mostly days but may involve evening shift(s).

Director
Working to the given brief, oversee creative style and format of film and work with the rest of the crew to achieve this.
Skills and personal attributes: Leadership, communication, people skills, experience of filmmaking.

Producer
Working to the given brief, take overall responsibility for the content of the film. Produce filming schedule, decide what to film and who to interview, and work with the rest of the crew to achieve this.
Skills and personal attributes: Organisation, communication, people skills, experience of filmmaking.

Camera Operator (two positions)
Operate the camera and film according to schedule. Help with logging of tapes.
Skills and personal attributes: Technical knowledge and experience of operating camera equipment, a flexible approach.

Sound Engineer (two positions)
Take responsibility for the camera sound, and the output from the stage mixing desk.
Skills and personal attributes: Technical knowledge and experience of sound recording (ideally sound for film), a flexible approach.

Researcher (two positions)
Investigate film locations on-site and report back, find interviewees and brief them before filming.
Skills and personal attributes: Organisation, people skills, creativity, initiative.

Editor
Log tapes and Work with director and producer to edit film (will be editing on-site and may need to finish after the festival).
Skills and personal attributes: Technical knowledge and experience of editing film, working well under pressure, self-motivated, good time management.

HATs (Helpful Area Teams)

HATs will work in teams, spread around the festival arena. Volunteers will be a visible presence in the arena, assisting festival-goers with directions and information, and reporting on any problems - such as litter and facilities.

Working hours: Between 10am and 11pm - in split shifts to be arranged

HATs Manager
Oversee all HATs teams, be on-call for any problems, liaise with Leeds Met management staff and Festival Republic staff as appropriate.

HATs Team Leader (four positions)
Team leaders will be required to supervise a HATs team, including being on-call for any problems and liaise with HATs manager and Leeds Met management staff.

HATs Team Member (sixty positions)
Be a visible presence in the arena; assist festival-goers with directions and information, report on any problems - such as litter and facilities. You will be required to provide and wear your own fancy dress to fit with the nature of the festival.

Lucy McCann is an Events Management alumnus from Leeds Met, who worked for Festival Republic this year at Latitude as Artist Liaison. 

From working previously at Latitude with our university, she made important contacts and kept in touch with her supervisor at the time. As a result of this she was offered paid work this year. She comments that "networking and staying in touch with people is vital for a career in the music industry."
