Public Relations & Communications

The idea of developing and contributing to news stories from around the world is inspiring and exciting.  This translates into working directly for news and sports media organisations such as CNN, the BBC or Reuters or as an in-house or consultant representative for organisations that are in or making the news.

Links with Industry
All PR & Communication undergraduate students (excluding journalism students) are encouraged to take a placement year during their third year to gain real hands on industry experience. Our students really benefit from our close links with practitioners in a wide variety of professions, many of whom provide opportunities for our students to gain work experience during their time at university and great jobs upon graduating.

Our BA Journalism course is developed in close contact with the NCJT (National Council for Training of Journalists) and develops skills suited to the fast-changing media environment of the 21st century.

Events
The Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) sponsors our PR guest lecture series which attracts professional speakers from organisations such as Google, Sony and Oxfam, as well as award winning PR agencies such as Freud Communications.

Student Opportunities
We even have our own CIPR student members' magazine Behind the Spin to which budding writers are encouraged to contribute and which has many interesting news stories and features written by our students. As well as this students have the opportunity to write for the university's student newspaper Leeds On. There is a Student Comms Unit within the Students' Union which was set up by a BA Public Relations student and PR & Communications students are encouraged to get involved in.

Many students and alumni choose to create blogs on their experieces in the communications industry, students may also choose to contribute to the FBL Blog.

PR & Communications Alumni
This year we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the undergraduate degree in public relations at Leeds Metropolitan University.

To mark this anniversary, the http://20yearson.wordpress.com/ blog tells the stories of some of those who have graduated from or have taught on the course; and it contains reflections from present day PR students at Leeds Business School.

Students studying public relations at Leeds Metropolitan are in close contact with industry right from the beginning of their first year at university.  Many of our alumni are now running successful PR agencies or working in challenging roles in companies across the UK and even further afield. Many of them are keen to keep in touch with us and provide excellent opportunities for our students.
