Background
Maria qualified as a solicitor in Manchester in 1975. She holds a personal chair in Law and Legal Practice. Her strength lies in the development and design, management and delivery of professional legal education at institutional and national level, and she has extensive experience at all stages of professional legal education and training, from undergraduate to postgraduate, to professional and Continuing Professional Development.

Her ability to evaluate this area of education and training has been recognised through appointments as Quality Assessor for HEFCE, QAA, Solicitors Regulation Authority, and as an Accreditor for the Law Society of Scotland. Her current national roles include Chief External Examiner for Litigation for the SRA, External Examiner for the Bar Standards Board, and in validation and review for both professional bodies. Her most recent contributions to policy development have included membership of the LPC 3 Working Party, and developing competency frameworks for Solicitors Higher Rights of Audience, and for the new Public Defenders' Scheme.

Interests
Maria teaches and provides academic leadership in professional conduct, solicitors' accounts and wills probate and administration on the Legal Practice Course.

Her research interests include professional conduct and regulation, and the role of work based learning in the modern qualifications framework of professional legal education.
