John Shutt is Professor of employment & Regional Development, and Director of the European Regional Business & Economic Development Unit (ERBEDU), at Leeds Business School.

John was previously Deputy Director of the Centre for Local Economic Strategies, Manchester, the local government economic think tank, and has worked for Sheffield and Birmingham City Councils and Central Lancashire Development Corporation in the economic development, housing and planning fields.

John has extensive United Kingdom and European experience in urban and regional economic development policy and has undertaken research assignments in China, South Africa and the United States. He has undertaken research for the European Commission, British Council, local authorities, Training and Enterprise Councils and the not-for-profit and private sectors. He has undertaken a wide variety of urban regeneration research. He is currently researching the new Regionalism, regional and local economic development strategies, regional economic development agencies and city futures and European Union regional policy.

He teaches at Leeds Business School on the Leeds MBA, the Masters in Policy Studies, the Masters in Economic Regeneration and the MSc in Management Consultancy.

His main interests are in European and regional economic development, local economic development, private sector change management, strategic consultancy work, public-private partnerships, regional governance, urban policy, and strategic spatial planning.
