Financial services sector
The financial industry is developing strongly in Zhejiang. Many of our leeds business school students enter the financial sectors. The Hangzhou-Nimbo financial zone is being developed as a window to the outside world. Hangzhou is also building links with Dubai. There is emphasis in China on financial sector innovation and developing the banking sector at the moment.
Digital industries and cultural industries
There is an emphasis on developing China's information technology sector and internet industries. High technology strategies and Digital China are at the heart of new developments. Hangzhou Hi-Technology zone and companies like Alibaba are of great interest to Leeds Business School. Hangzhou aims to be the silicon valley of China and is also developing a tourist and cultural industries.
Environmental industries
China has recognised the need to develop green and low carbon economies. The current emphasis is on controlling highly polluting and high energy consumption industries. In Dongtan, just outside Zhejiang province in Shanghai city-region, a commitment has been made to develop the first of five new Chinese eco-cities. In Hangzhou itself, a major commitment has been made to public transport and the new Hangzhou Metro opens in 2010. Energy, waste and environmental industries will be a key sector for investigation.
Public sector services
Hospitals and public services form an important part of the Hangzhou economy. Public services reform is an on-going issue and more attention is being paid to local government reform. We will look at skills and training issues in the public sector And at public sector employment features
Advanced manufacturing and SME developments
China is seeking to change its industrial structure by importing more advanced technologies and improve the skills of its work force. It is developing a greater focus on export-oriented strategies and moving away from a low cost manufacturing economy. It is developing its role in the WTO and seeking to take a stronger strategic role in trade policy. Our existing provision focuses on the Masters in International Trade and Finance and the delivery has been very successful. We are seeking to examine the next steps in Chinese business education.
