Work Experience Meets Everest

I have been extremely fortunate to undertake work experience associated with the Everest West Ridge 2006 project. The focus of this has been researching the influence of diet and energy expenditure on body composition and well being at extreme altitude. This has involved analysis of the EWR team dietary intakes using purpose designed food, fluid and activity diaries, piloted for suitability and ease of use at training camps in the Swiss Alps. These diaries provide an overview of current training diets informing dietary prescriptions proposed for the Expedition itself.

Achieving a balance between energy intake and expenditure is of paramount importance to maintaining body mass, nutritional status and physical and mental well-being whilst at extreme altitude, therefore careful designs of dietary plans and prescriptions during the expedition are essential to ensure not only optimal achievement of the team but the safety of each individual. These are fascinating aspects of the project, my involvement in which has given me a great insight into the area of nutrition. Whilst having had the fantastic opportunity to be part of history I have gained extensive knowledge and skills that I intent to apply to an extensive piece of independent study in my final year.
