From a point somewhere currently in the middle distance, the Everest West Ridge expedition is increasingly beginning to gather momentum and carry us nearer to its pinnacle. For those with a lifelong relationship with the outdoors either for our own consumption or through providing adventure for others, the attempt on the highest mountain in the world by the toughest route presents an absorbing image that even those with experience find hard to comprehend.

The series of EWR lectures involving Leeds Met staff and members of the Army team is providing all of us with an insight into the scope and complexity of what it will take to succeed in this challenge. The synthesis of cutting edge scientific support in physiology, nutrition and psychology is being put directly into practice in the most testing circumstances. Professor Carlton Cooke provided a vision in his inaugural lecture of the relevance of our work to the efforts of those who are on this occasion performing literally at the highest level. We will see the culmination of this in what will happen on Everest in just a few weeks and we can reflect on what we can learn from this extraordinary experience supporting outstanding champions.
