EWR 2006 and Leeds Met
John O’Hara and
his team (including Amanda
Seims and Aaron
Thomas)
on behalf of Leeds Met’s renowned Carnegie
Faculty of Sport & Education is leading the provision of sport
science support to help the team in their fitness preparations for the
ascent. Leeds Met Carnegie are putting
the EWR 2006 main and development teams through a series of physiological
assessments using the latest equipment and expertise. Testing is happening
on four separate occasions in the run-up to the expedition. The information
collected and analysed by the Leeds Met team will enable Chips Rafferty
(EWR 2006 physical performance coach) to prescribe the relevant training
in preparation for the expedition. This programme of testing and prescription
will ensure that all the team members are in the best physiological condition
they can be prior to the expedition.
Leeds Met is also providing a significant input into the nutritional
strategies for the expedition, led by Louise
Sutton and Professor
Rod King. They are delivering a series of educational sessions to the team
as well as high altitude product acceptability testing. They are advising
the team on eating strategies to aid in their preparation for the expedition,
as well as strategies once they are on Everest itself. The nutritional
support will ensure that team members are well equipped with knowledge
and products, which will enable them to maintain a sustained and balanced
effort for the duration of the expedition.
An expert group of sport & exercise psychologists at Leeds
Met, led by Professor Jim McKenna and his team (including John
Allan,
Steve Cobley and Belinda
Cooke), is helping to prepare the team mentally for the huge
task ahead. This is being coordinated by Mark Woodhouse, the EWR 2006
high performance coach. They are performing a series of personal interviews
based upon progressive focusing addressing the personal development and
concerns of individual climbers and how they anticipate managing their
concerns during the preparation for the expedition.
It may be that certain members of the team could use the experience
and knowledge gained through the expedition to further their own educational
qualifications. Leeds Met is also encouraging all-comers to study the
expedition, from the preparation to the ascent and descent.
