The world today is a very different place from what it was even three years ago. We have seen unprecedented changes that have impacted on society, individuals and on the profession of public relations. Front-of-mind is the economic downturn and its effects on organisations and society along with the struggle for economic recovery and the varying responses of governments to both implement savings and promote growth. There are other major challenges: citizens are questioning their own values and those of their societies and organisations; there are increasing tensions between nations and ideologies and of course, there are the opportunities and difficulties that living in a global, interconnected and interdependent world bring.
Public relations has played its role in all these events and issues and many others. Some see it as part of the problem, others will say it is part of the solution too. Re-thinking the role, responsibilities and response of academics and the profession will be core themes of this conference. Can public relations rise to the challenge that is posed? If so, how?
Sub-themes are:
. Economic turbulence
. Ideological clashes
. Social issues and dislocation
. Organisational change
. Theoretical approaches and differences
. Ethics
. New directions in public relations and communication
