The PDSA - Transforming the Headingley Shop

shadwell schoolPDSA operates around 180 charity shops nationally to raise money to be used to provide veterinary care to pets of people who cannot afford it. The Leeds Headingley shop is struggling to break even in 2009.

PDSA is therefore looking for a unique solution to make the shop profitable. The student-led project aims to assess PDSA’s current operation at Headingley and then design and implement changes to meet the specific local market. An inter-disciplinary group of Leeds Met students are working collaboratively, as part of their assessed coursework, to upgrade and help run the shop and the project offers real, hands-on retailing, marketing and business experience.

The Real News at Shadwell Primary

shadwell school The Institute for Enterprise has been working in partnership with Shadwell Primary School in support of developing enterprise skills in school children through the creation of a school newspaper. The Institute for Enterprise will continue to loan digital cameras and audio recorders to the school until the end of the CETL lifespan to assist with the creation of the newspaper. Pupils also took part in the events marking Global Entrepreneurship Week.

A preview event for the summer edition of the newspaper ‘The Real News at Shadwell Primary’ was held in Old Broadcasting House in June 2009. Further details regarding the event can be found here.

If you would like to become involved in the newspaper, wish to receive a copy, arrange advertising or may be able to offer sponsorship for the project then please contact Liz Carter.

Embedding Enterprise in Inter-professional Learning

Faculty of Health
Project Leader: Dr Catherine Sanderson, Principal Lecturer Health Science and Enterprise Pioneer

The Faculty of Health has not traditionally embraced the Enterprise in the Curriculum agenda as the perception is that core drivers are about health and social welfare support rather than wealth generation through business initiatives. This project will help to raise awareness of different forms of enterprise through embedding innovative educational activities in the Faculty inter-professional learning programme. This will facilitate enterprising attributes in health and social care students. This project will help staff and students to understand that the social enterprise agenda is an integral part of health care delivery and will become increasingly so in the future.

Hospitality Careers

Additionally, they will be supported in moving their initial creative thoughts into workable and marketable projects. Leeds Met students will benefit the British Institute of Innkeeping Accrediting Body, high school pupils aged 11-16 years and the Centre for Hospitality and Retailing by providing industry with imaginative products that promote the benefits and flexibility of working in the hospitality industry.

Database Forensics Case-Study

Innovation North
Project Leader: Jacqueline Campbell, Associate Senior Lecturer Connectivity and Interactive Systems and Enterprise Pioneer

posterStudents at L2 and L3 will benefit from a case-study that demonstrates the importance of database concepts via an intriguing and problem-based approach. All students will be able to realise some of the simple data anomalies and investigate and implement constraints to protect the data. For students requiring a greater challenge there will be a requirement to understand that data fully and use advanced techniques to provide evidence of the ‘fraud’ and recommendations to enhance the security of the database. Potentially it could be used as an Open Educational Resource for other institutions to use. Through this approach, students will develop a range of enterprise and employability skills including effective communication, decision-making and ‘real-world’ application of theory. They will also increase their motivation to learn and build their confidence.

A Business Enterprise Unit for Sport Business Management Students

Carnegie Faculty of Sport & Education
Project Leader: Nick Halafihi, Carnegie

posterThe framework that we are developing is based on a hierarchy that places the student experience as a priority linked closely to subject development and research, knowledge transfer and third stream income generation and value added in this priority order. It is based on the principle that we can tap into the latent potential of our staff and students more fully if we stay close to what we do best and think clearly about our priorities and focus on strengths.
We intend to engage students in the ‘real-world’ and enhance their appreciation and learning of business, marketing and enterprise. This initiative would be focused on the development of a real ‘live’ business which would be facilitated, directed, and managed by the course team and their students. Its sole purpose would be to act as an Enterprise and Business Unit which would assist students to plan, develop and implement funding and pursue enterprise ventures and business ideas. For these students the success is all in the learning and in attempting to complete a process so that they can produce better responses next time. This type of learning equips the student with the necessary employability skills to use in the ‘real-world’ and puts the students at a genuine advantage to those graduates who have yet to experience the failures or successes of the genuine business industry

Engaging Students, Engaging Industry, Engaging Enterprise

Leslie Silver International Faculty
Project Leader: Barry Blake, LSIF

posterUK CEM would like to celebrate engagement with industry which enhances the student experience and to showcase the creative capabilities of students for more enterprising activities in the future. During placements, students are set a task by their ‘employers’ to provide solutions to a current business issue. Some of the projects encourage high levels of enterprise, but some do not. The project will create a publication showcasing the most enterprising projects to stimulate students and industry partners. Students spend time after placement reflecting on current issues within events, the development of the panel will help students and academics consider creative responses for the future. We will stage an event ‘Making Events Sparkle’ where the enterprising talents of students will be showcased in front of events, tourism and hospitality companies through a ‘future thinking’ cross subject group / cross faculty student panel able to answer questions about the future for events and a launch of a case studies publication illustrating the enterprising responses of students to a range of ‘company set projects’. The project will result in an event managed by students for industry, an enterprise learning experience for a cross–subject/ cross-faculty team of at least six students and at least three academics and a new case studies publication.
