Find out more: This opportunity is to work at The Kaliandra Foundation, a philanthropic organisation which runs village-based development programmes in East Java. Leeds Met are proud to have a lasting partnerhsip with Kaliandra and 2010 sees the fourth group of  volunteers participating on a range of activities, from teaching English to tourism and hospitality activies and working with a Home Stay Association in a rural village close to Kaliandra. After the project work, volunteers can join a trip for some river-rafting and volcano-visiting in the highlands. There is also the opportunity to visit Bali to sample some of the vast array of cultural differences in Indonesia and relax on the beaches.

Adventurousness rating: 4 out of 5! The accommodation at Kaliandra is basic, but fine. There will be a certain amount of culture shock but key members of Kaliandra staff speak English. For the time spent with the Home Stay association, volunteers will stay with families who will speak little or no English.  The food is different to Western society, although there are many similarities with Thai and Chinese cuisine.
