Carnegie Village now open for business

Work on Leeds Metropolitan University's Headingley Campus pioneering Carnegie Village scheme has been completed. The exciting, high-specification residential development offers all year round residential conference facilities to delegates with a number of high profile organisations already booking the site.

The England Rugby Union Junior Squad are the first guests to experience the high specification Village with other recent visitors including teams from the Paralympics, the South African Olympic Delegation and the Football Association, who were working on the UK 2018 World Cup bid.

Consisting of townhouses on the University campus the Carnegie Village accommodation blocks have been named after Yorkshire rivers -  Aire, Calder, Nidd, Swale, Don and Esk - and comprise of 479 student residential bedrooms including 7 adapted rooms for disabled students. For conference delegates there will be 23 rooms available all year round increasing up to 370 out of term time (between 29th June and 15th September).

The Carnegie Village was designed and specified to satisfy sustainable design and achieved a BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) rating of 'Excellent'.  One block within the Village has been designed and built to achieve 'PassivHaus' standards, which is a landmark project for the education sector.

The PassivHaus has an enhanced building envelope that reduces heating levels to the point that a conventional heating system is not required. The PassivHaus benefits from increased levels of thermal insulation, triple-glazing to doors and windows and hot water supplied by regenerative energy sources.  The construction has received BRE (British Research Establishment) PassivHaus design approval.  Heat generated from the occupants, computing equipment and cooking is re-circulated to keep the building warm.  The Carnegie Village itself is made up of 13% recycled material.

Work commenced on the Carnegie Village in May 2008 in collaboration with developers UPP (University Partnerships Programme), who will be running the accommodation, Principal Contractor Shepherd Construction Ltd and Architects GWP.
