1st European Race Walking Conference

5th  November 2010 - 7th November2010

The European Athletics Association and the UK Athletics National Race Walking Centre at Carnegie, Leeds Metropolitan University are pleased to announce the 1st European Race Walking Conference is to be staged at Carnegie from 5th to 7th November 2010. The event is part of the EAA Coaching Summit Series and is also being supported by UKA and England Athletics.

The theme for the Conference will be the twin pillars of Long Term Coach Development and Athlete Development. The conference will be an exciting mix of key note addresses, lectures and practical workshops and is suitable for both coaches and athletes. Speakers will be drawn from coaches, practitioners from the fields of sports science and medicine, and academics.

Speakers/Presenters/Workshop Leaders will include:

Brent Vallance (AUS) - Australian Institute of Sport Walks Coach, Coach to Double Olympic Medallist Jared Tallent. 

Antonio La Torre (ITA) - Coach to Ivano Brugnetti (2004 Olympic Champion) and Associate Professor of Sport Science, University of Milan.

Peter Marlow (GBR) & Luis Saladie (ESP) - are IAAF Race Walking Judge Tutors as well as respected international judges.

Professor Patrick Duffy (IRL) - Leeds Metropolitan University - Professor of Coaching: - Professor Duffy has played a significant role in the development of Sports Coaching in the UK, Ireland and internationally. Pat was instrumental in establishing the UK Coaching Framework. Pat was formerly the CEO of Sports Coach UK and Director of the Irish National Coaching and Training Centre, University of Limerick and has worked with European Athletics Association.

Pat Ryan (IRL) - Director of Development, Athletics Ireland

Alison Rose (GBR) - Head Physiotherapist, Carnegie Sports Physiotherapy Clinic will lead a session on Injury prevention - Alison is a former international marathon runner, Alison has worked with UK Athletics and the English Institute of Sport for a number of years. She was Kelly Holmes physio in the lead up to her double gold medals in Athens. She is also the physio to current World and European Champion Jess Ennis. She currently works with the race walkers based at the UKANCRW at Carnegie.

Brian Hanley (IRL) - Biomechanist, Leeds Metropolitan University - Brian has undertaken a number of comprehensive studies into the biomechanics of race walking. This has involved undertaking the testing of numerous athletes in the laboratory and studies of the 2007 and 2009 European Cup Race Walking, 2008 IAAF World Race Walking Cup and 2010 European Athletics Championships. He has also used his findings to inform and educate international race walking judges on the biomechanics of race walking.

Louise Sutton (GBR) - Principal Lecturer, Carnegie, Leeds Metropolitan University. Louise is a sports nutritionist who has worked with a number of professional sports teams and athletes.

Andrew Abraham (GBR) - Principal Lecturer, Carnegie, Leeds Metropolitan University and other colleagues from the Sports Coaching Faculty and UK Centre for Coaching Excellence will lead a practical workshop on coach decision making.

Dr Andi Drake (GBR) - Carnegie Director of Race Walking at UKA National Centre for Race Walking and exercise physiologist. Andi has published widely around the physiology and biomechanics of race walking.
