Flashpoints in a Fraught Relationship: Understanding ‘Islam’ and ‘the West’

Introduction

Leeds Metropolitan University held a major one-day conference to examine and understand what seems to be an increasingly fraught relationship between ‘Islam’ and ‘the West’. This has been revealed in a number of ‘flashpoints’ such as the controversies over the Danish cartoons,  Jack Straw’s comments on the wearing of the niqab, and Pope Benedict’s Regensburg lecture. More generally, it is this fraught relationship that has been seen by some to require a rethinking or even rejection of Britain’s commitment to multiculturalism.

The conference provided an opportunity to reflect on these and other issues through plenary, workshop and roundtable sessions, exploring both sides (or the many sides) of the debate. Its purpose to bring together a wide range of speakers and participants who are prepared to address these difficult and sensitive questions in an open-minded way and in a spirit of promoting mutual understanding and trust.

A range of facilities were available at the conference venue, including refreshments and a prayer room.
