Research interests
Jonathan's major research interests centre around leisure policies and practices related to social change and issues of social justice. The success of a study to assess the nature and extent of racism in rugby league led to subsequent studies of local league cricket and grass roots football. These were in turn followed by an evaluation for Sporting Equals of the progress of national sports organisations in implementing racial equality policies. Other research includes a longstanding interest in ageing, an evaluation of a diversionary scheme introducing at risk youth to leisure and sports activities, research for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport on social inclusion, and a study for the Central Council of Physical Recreation of social capital generated by national governing bodies of sport.  He has also been working with colleagues evaluating physical activity initiatives.  Other clients include various local authorities, Sport England, the Heritage Lottery Fund (projects on partnership funding and skills development), Scottish Natural Heritage (lifestyles, needs and outdoor recreation), and Thames Gateway Partnership (skills for the millennium).
