Headingley Carnegie Stadium, Wednesday 26 August 2009

The Carnegie Floodlit Nines is a one day rugby league nines tournament which hosts 12 senior teams including six Engage Super League clubs.

In its second year the compeitions has attracted the likes of

  • Army
  • Cumbria RL
  • Huddersfield Giants
  • Hull FC
  • Hull KR
  • Leeds Met Carnegie
  • Wakefield Wildcats
  • Warrington Wolves
  • Leeds Rhinos
  • Jamaica
  • Cheltenham Nines Winners
  • Northern Rail Nines Winners

The competition reignites the old 'Floodlit Trophy' which ran between 1965 and 1979.  Broadcast nationally, it was an innovative competition that introduced limited-tackle rugby league and was the first major sporting competition to be played regularly under floodlights. Three winners of the original Floodlit Trophy - Hull KR, Hull FC and Leeds Rhinos - will be taking part in the Carnegie 9s.

The tournament also revives the tradition of the Headingley 7s, which was staged at Headingley between 1965 and 1978, and provided a feast of high energy league action for fans.
