History of Carnegie
Leeds Metropolitan University is also known as Carnegie after its Carnegie Faculty of Sport & Education. 75 years ago, money left by Andrew Carnegie, the Scottish entrepreneur, established a PE teacher training college which has been known ever since for excellence in sport. The links between rugby and Carnegie go back to 1936 when one of its first students, the legendary Eric Harris, scored a famous try when Leeds won the Challenge Cup at Wembley.
A University of festivals and partnerships
Leeds Metropolitan University is the official education partner of the RFL (Rugby Football League). The six year partnership is the first of its kind between a higher education institution and a national sports governing body in England, and includes title sponsorship of Rugby League's most prestigious domestic knockout tournament, the Carnegie Challenge Cup, as well as the Carnegie Champion Schools Tournament and Carnegie Champion Colleges Cup. These events combined with a wide range of projects and placements provide unique opportunities for student ambassadors to represent the university and develop skills in marketing, public relations, events management, sports development and many other areas. The RFL's six full-time match officials are also based at the Leeds Met's Headingley Campus, giving them access to the university's world-class facilities.
Our distinctive University Vision & Character sets out our approach to festivals and partnerships creating a culture of celebration. We value pioneering relationships with other world-class regional organisations to deliver new and enhanced learning opportunities, provide inspirational experiences and realise added value for students, partners, the university and our respective communities.
Our successful partnerships with world class regional organisations open up new links and opportunities across education, the arts, sport, business and wider community life. We will continue our commitment to partnerships which raise our aspirations, add value to our university community and externally, and support our vision to be a University of Festivals and Partnerships.
