Carnegie Research Institute
Welcome from Professor Carlton Cooke
Welcome to the Carnegie Research Institute (CRI). The CRI provides the structure through which a diverse range of knowledge is generated from our research and disseminated locally, nationally and internationally.
At the CRI we have targeted and developed areas of excellence through focused, high quality cross-disciplinary research. The research conducted in and through the CRI draws on our strengths across diverse areas of inquiry and methodologies to deliver consistently excellent outputs and make valuable contributions towards the fields within which we teach and conduct research. The work undertaken within the CRI embraces different styles in pedagogic/educational research, sports science and the critical social science approach to festivals and events, leisure, sport studies, and tourism.
The CRI has a national and international reputation for the quality of both its research output and the high profile researchers it is able to attract as research and teaching staff, Visiting Professors, Research Fellows and Scholars. Our work is focused on childhood, education, festivals and events, leisure, sport and tourism and organized around research centres that reflect Carnegie's specialisms and areas of strength. It also informs our teaching, and helps staff and research students to develop their research through a vibrant research culture that encourages debate, collaboration and interaction. The quality of research undertaken in the CRI is evident in the outstanding results achieved in the Research Assessment Exercise completed in 2008. Our Sport Related Studies unit of assessment ranked 6th nationally in quality and 3rd when quantity is also accounted for. Our Education unit also recorded research activity that was judged world leading and internationally excellent.
We are proud of our performance in the RAE and the profile of high quality research in Carnegie but we also strive to develop a rich research culture among all staff, integrating our research and teaching and making an impact both locally and globally. Through our research we aim to make a difference by reformulating theory, informing policy and guiding professional practice. As part of this mission we are committed to fostering debate, encouraging discussion and exchange of ideas. To this end we run national conferences, have a series of inaugural professorial lectures, a weekly seminar series that regularly features international presenters and a number of other events. Apart from major conferences that require registration, all of these are open to anyone who is interested in our research.
