Kevin gained his first degree in PE and Business Administration at Trinity and All Saints College before working in sports development. Whilst in sports development he studied for a Masters degree in Leisure Studies at Leeds Metropolitan University and completed a PhD focusing on 'Race', Sport and Equal Opportunities in Local Government in 2003. Before starting with Carnegie, Kevin taught in further education where he led Access to Higher Education courses in sport and leisure studies in addition to leading the Prince's Trust Volunteers when teaching in Wolverhampton.
Kevin is Course leader of the MA in Sport, Leisure & Equity and Reader in the Social Science of Sport, Leisure and PE subject group in the Carnegie Faculty of Sport and Education. Kevin has been heavily involved in community sports development and work concerning fairness and race equality. Kevin has conducted research into 'race' and ethnicity, in particular racism in sport and equal opportunities in local government.
A founder member of the Black sports forum (BEMSport) in Yorkshire, Kevin has worked with the a number of governing bodies on issues of equality such as the Badminton Association of England, ILAM, Sport England (Regional/National) and Sport Leeds.
Kevin co-edited the first substantive text on sports development in 2001 for Routledge Sports Development: Policy, Process and Practice which is now in preparation for its 3rd Edition (2012). Kevin also wrote 'Race' and Sport: Critical Race Theory, which was recommended by Routledge as "one of the top ten resources for teaching undergraduates to think critically about the role of sport in society" (2009). Kevin won a Promising Researcher Fellowship in 2006/7 where took up a Visiting Fellowship at the University of Leeds. Kevin works closely with the Higher Education Association's Centre for Sociology, Anthropology and Politics (C-SAP) and is on the Associate Board of Sociology.

Kevin's research interests are focused on 'race', antiracism, inclusion/exclusion in sport and leisure, and community sports development. Kevin's first substantive study with the Faculty involved coordinating a Leisure Needs Audit on the East Bank of Leeds in 1995. This has been followed by evaluations into social inclusion/exclusion for the Department of Culture Media and Sport, and an evaluation of Sportsweb (community sport) for Bradford Leisure and Recreation Service. Kevin's work around 'race' and ethnicity has been extended into work for Kick Racism Out of Football (Kick it Out) and a recent update of the suite of studies into racism in rugby, cricket and football. More recently, Kevin's research interests have been focused on Critical Race Theory.
