Meet the Careers Staff
Careers Advisor
Wayne became a member of staff at Leeds Metropolitan University in 1993. He previously worked for the local authority careers service in Leeds. Wayne is the faculty adviser for Business and Law and Innovation North.
Wayne is a member of the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS). He has a full Diploma in Careers Guidance, a Certificate in Personnel Practice, Psychometric Testing Certificates at Level A and B. Wayne has organised recruitment activities such as Graduate Recruitment Fairs and he is the main contact person for the Student/Graduate Networking Event.
Careers Advisor
Sue has been a Careers Adviser at the university since 2005 working with students and staff across all faculties. She has had particular responsibility for a number of courses during that time including most recently Retail and Hospitality and prior to that Computing, Music and Interactive Media. She currently chairs the Faculty Advisers Working Group.
Sue has over 20 years experience in a broad range of roles including working in schools, colleges, the Adult Guidance Sector and in Training and Development where she had responsibility for training new advisers and delivering INSET Training to staff in schools and colleges. She is a qualified NVQ Assessor and Internal Verifier and has a Bachelor of Education Degree and the Post Graduate Diploma in Careers Guidance. She is also a member of the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS).
Careers Information Assistant
Rachael is the Careers Information Assistant at Headingley Campus and has been in post since December 2008. Prior to this she also worked for the Job Shop. She is a Leeds Met tourism management graduate and has completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Careers Guidance.
As the first point of contact at Headingley Careers Centre, Rachael helps with information queries and booking careers appointments. Part of her job also involves helping to keep our careers resources up-to-date, providing administrative support to the careers advisers and assisting with careers events.
Information Advisor
A chartered librarian and Leeds Met Graduate with 20 years of careers experience. Based at Civic Quarter, she maintains the careers library, is available to answer information enquiries on a drop-in basis and via email and is also responsible for advertising and editing vacancies for Jobs Online. Member of the Careers Information, Employer Engagement and Quality and Staff Development Groups also an AGCAS Associate.
Careers and Education Guidance Advisor
Margaret became a member of staff at Leeds Metropolitan University in 2000 and is the advisor you are most likely to meet if you come into Leeds Met for an education guidance appointment. Margaret is a member of the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS). She has a BA degree in Business Information Management, an NVQ in Advice and Guidance and is currently working towards her professional qualifications in HE Careers work.
Margaret is interested in advising mature students on routes into higher education and the range of courses available to them.
Head of Guidance
Jackie is the Careers Team Leader and also the liaison adviser for the Faculty of Arts & Society. She holds a degree in History & Politics and a Diploma in Careers Guidance and worked in Birmingham for a number of years before joining Leeds Met in 2001. She is trained in Level A psychometric testing and has qualifications/experience in training the trainers and assessment of guidance practitioners.
As well as having a commitment to helping students and graduates to make well informed, realistic decisions that will assist them in reaching their potential, she is also keen to work with any Leeds Met staff members who need guidance regarding career progression/change.
Careers Advisor (part-time)
Christine has worked at Leeds Met since 2006 as a qualified Careers Adviser and is currently the liaison adviser to the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences. She previously worked on the IMPACT project to raise the employability skills of Black and Ethnic Minority students through individual careers support, coaching, group workshops, lectures and a mentoring scheme. She worked at Leeds University for several years with part time students delivering individual guidance, careers education and a mentoring scheme. She has previous HR management experience.
Christine has a degree in Education and Professional Development, is a member of AGCAS and the Institute of Careers Guidance. Particular interests are careers education, employability, and motivational personality assessment in which she is qualified.
Careers Advisor (Part-Time)
Marah has worked as a careers adviser at Leeds Met for fourteen years and previously taught short courses here. She works mainly with students from Modern Languages, Politics and International Studies, Tourism, Events Management and Entertainment Management courses.
Her qualifications include a BA (Hons) Russian degree, Diploma in Careers Guidance, PGCE, MA in Education, Counselling Certificate and City and Guilds qualifications in teaching basic skills and E2L. Marah is a member of the professional body for university careers advisers, AGCAS and has a special interest in career development for postgraduate researchers.
Other experience includes careers advice, personal and professional development work in colleges, schools, universities, local communities and with young offenders. For five years she organised cultural exchanges with Eastern European countries - interpreting, leading groups and making funding bids. Marah lived in the USA for several years, doing advisory work for a disability project for the University of Hawaii. She also worked as a detached youth worker in Manchester and taught modern languages and English in a high school.
Administrative Assistant (Part-Time)
Ann has worked as an Administrative Assistant within the Careers Service for the past 10 years. As the first point of contact Ann welcomes students, staff and visitors assess their needs and refers them to the relevant people or department.
Employer Network Advisor (Part-Time)
Career Services Manager
Phil Marsland is Career Services Manager and has overall responsibility for Jobs & Careers. He became a member of staff at the university since 1992 and prior to joining worked as a Project Manager with Leeds City Council. He is an experienced and qualified Careers Adviser and a member of AGCAS. Phil is a graduate and also holds qualifications in counselling, training and recently, coaching. He chairs and convenes the Jobs & Careers Marketing Working Group.
His professional interests include the development of adult employability and lifeskills, business and life coaching, staff development and employer engagement.
Careers Advisor (Part-Time)
Rachel works with students, staff and graduates with specific responsibility for promoting the service in the Carnegie Faculty and aims to be well informed about graduate opportunities for students from Carnegie courses.
Rachel joined Leeds Met in Sept. 2004 after over 20 years of experience of careers guidance work in schools, colleges and universities. She is a graduate with a Diploma in Careers Guidance and is a Member of the Institute of Career Guidance and AGCAS (Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services). She takes a lead on guidance events for Leeds Met graduates and has run guidance workshops for staff.
Rachel's special interests are supporting applicants in to teacher training and education jobs. She keeps up to date with developments in teacher training and recruitment being a member of the North East Region Teaching group and a primary school governor involved in recruitment and selection. Rachel is interested in promoting the employability skills and experience offered by sports graduates.
Administrative Assistant (Part-Time)
Harriet has been in post at Leeds Met since 2005 and has so enjoyed working in Careers that she is now studying for the Post-graduate Certificate in Careers Education, Information and Guidance to further develop her own career.
Harriet is part of the careers information team and her work also involves working with employers. She is a member of the information, events and employer engagement working groups. Before joining Leeds Met, she worked as a translator and teacher, so has a special interest in these areas.
