Make speculative applications

Not all jobs are advertised widely so if you are looking for a very specific role you should also consider identifying companies in the field and making speculative applications (with a CV and covering letter).

To identify companies you could:

  • Call in to the Careers Service at Civic Quarter or Headingley Campus to browse our resources
  • Talk to contacts from your course and people who already work in your field for ideas
  • Use the Prospects job profiles to identify typical employers in your field of work
  • Use the Prospects job database to identify employers currently recruiting in your field
  • Use the Business and Research section of the Leeds Central Library to research local employers

The use of social media for recruitment purposes is increasing. You can use social media to gather information about organisations you are interested in working for and to make contacts and network with individuals. Popular "social media" sites include Linked-In, Twitter and Facebook. Click here for a guide to "How to use LinkedIn to find a job"
