Placement & intern students

A placement or internship brings many benefits to the student – and advantages for the employer

Leeds Metropolitan prides itself on delivering courses that are up-to-date and reflect the real-world experience of work. Work-based learning is a key component of many of our courses. Not only can employers build long-term relationships with our students (with the opportunity to employ them in the future if they perform impressively), but can also benefit immediately from the new energy and fresh ideas that they can bring to your business.

About student work placements

Students usually spend one year doing their work placement between their 2nd and 3rd year. They are normally expected to work full-time for 48 weeks and may work for more than one company during this time.

Gaining experience of a real life work environment enhances the skills and expertise of our future work force by allowing students to further their knowledge in their chosen area of study. As well as developing personal and professional development, work-based learning also provides a network of industry contacts and job opportunities after graduation.

Benefits for your business

  • Allows your company to gain skilled undergraduates who are able to focus on specific projects
  • Students bring new and innovative ideas into the company
  • It can enhance your company image and raise its profile with the student population
  • It is a cost effective source of labour
  • Provides an opportunity for a company to assess a student’s potential for future employment
  • Gives the company an insight into current academic development in their particular discipline
  • Provides recruitment opportunity – many employers recruit placement students into graduate positions

Student internships

We regularly provide part-funded opportunities for employers to take either students or graduates into short-term internships of 6-12 weeks. Some of the organisations who currently offer internships to our students include, Northern Ballet, Festival Republic, Ptarmigan, KPMG, Leeds United, O2, Savvy Marketing and GE Capital.
