    Charitable Status

As a higher education corporation established under the Education Reform Act 1988, the University is classed as an exempt charity within the meaning of the Charities Act 1993 (as amended by the Charities Act 2006). It is therefore subject to charity legislation but is not required to register wtih the Charity Commission, therefore does not have a registered charity number, and is not regulated by it.

The University's principal regulator is the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) which is also its principal funder.

The University's Instrument and Articles of Government are in a form prescribed by law and do not include and explicit statement of charitable purposes.  The University's powers are set out in section 124 of the Education Reform Act 1998 (as amended).  On the basis of the powers and the University's pattern of activity since its incorporation, it would be reasonable to assume that its primary charitable purpose is 'the advancement of education'.
