Food, Nutrition and Health Research Centre
The Centre brings together a multidisciplinary team of highly experienced and dedicated researchers and practitioners to focus on issues in the area of Food, Nutrition and Health. This expertise involves colleagues from Nutrition and Dietetics, Microbiology, Environmental Health, Health Promotion and Health Economics, the multi-disciplinary nature provides a platform from which to study the wider determinants of public health and contribute to advancing of the science of food and nutrition and its application to human health and well-being.Childhood Obesity Research
Childhood obesity is a major public health issue; however there is limited evidence of treatment and preventative strategies within this area. As academic health professionals we are resolved not only to contributing ideas as to how the problem of obesity should be tackled, but also to ensuring that any new initiatives are rigorously evaluated so that resources are utilised in an effective and appropriate way. We are involved in addressing two aspects of the problem; i) The management of children who are already obese and ii) The prevention of childhood obesityMicrobiology and Environmental Health Consultancy
The University's Faculty of Health provides consultancy in Microbiology and Environmental Health. The Microbiology Unit has been actively involved in consultancy work for many years. Current projects concern shelf-life testing of foods and new food formulations, working with small to medium sized food companies in the Yorkshire region. This allows food manufacturers to understand the microbial stability of their products more closely and ultimately will make a positive impact on overall food safety.
Our Environmental Health Unit is involved in research into the effects of noise and vibration on human beings. Areas of particular expertise include workplace exposure to noise and vibration, sound transmission in buildings and the measurement and control of environmental noise. We are working in collaboration with a number of local architects and education authorities to develop an understanding of good acoustic design for teaching rooms
