Success Stories: Tutor Me

 

On the 7th of November 2007, a new and exciting tutoring Company based in Leeds was launched. ‘Tutor Me Limited' provides private home tuition via a network of final year students who boast the latest teaching techniques across the curriculum. Add this to the fun and determined approach these “soon to be” teachers bring with them and this can only mean one thing, A*s all round!

Rich McEvoy, a final year teaching student at Leeds Metropolitan University, came up with this unique concept. Working with long time friend and business partner Nick Smith subsequently enabled a great idea to become reality.


“I could see Rich had a great idea but was struggling with where to start. When we discussed it we realized the only way to get it off the ground was to work in partnership using Rich's knowledge of education and my business skills” says Nick.


Rich began tutoring himself, and due to the positive feedback received he decided to give others the same opportunity.

"Children respond better to those they can relate to. Those people are often closer to their own age so it makes sense to put the two together!" Says Rich.


Rich and Nick fully utilised the services that Business Start-Up has to offer, including numerous meetings with the business advisor and attending a variety of workshops, both of these services aim to help entrepreneurs develop their business skills.

In October 2007, they were awarded the Business Start-Up Proof of Concept grant, receiving £1000 to assist with the set up costs that all new businesses are faced with. The grant was used to promote the business as well as paying relevant legal fees.

Tutor Me was also short-listed as a finalist in the Level 2 Business Concept competition at Leeds Met, Level 2 being for businesses that have been trading for up to 12 months.
As the business approaches the end of the first year of trading, Tutor Me now employs teaching students from a number of universities and colleges in Yorkshire, including the University of Huddersfield, Sheffield Hallam University, the University of Leeds and Leeds Trinity College.

Kirstie Frenneaux, Business Start-Up Project Manager says, “When we were first approached about Tutor Me we could see it was a great idea so didn't hesitate to offer our support. There are benefits for the University, students and of course Tutor Me's customers so it's a win, win, win situation.”

Primary School curriculum through to GCSE and A-Level subjects will be taught by students in the final year of their course. Adult learning and tuition for parents wanting to assist their children with homework are also things to also look forward to.
