Case study: Shaky Jakes

After graduating from his Events Management degree at Leeds Metropolitan University in 2004, Patrick Windle and partner Katie Duxbury have launched their first business,
Shaky Jakes.

Shaky Jakes is a milkshake bar situated on North Lane in Headingley, serving more than 200 different milkshakes. Choices include Cadbury's Crunchie and Creme Egg, Apple Pie, Jelly Tots, Black Jacks and many many more! You can also add extras such as toffee popcorn and marshmallows to customise your chosen shake, leaving the creations endless!

The 1950's style café also serves old-fashioned Yorkshire ice creams, coffee and cakes. You can even ask for your milkshake warm so that on a cold day your customised shake can still be enjoyed!

“We felt that Headingley was missing a business of this nature where there is something for everyone, not just students or drinkers. We cater for everyone from school kids to their grandparents. We thought of the idea, took a gamble and it has paid off” says Patrick.

Patrick and Katie were awarded the Proof of Concept grant that Business Start-Up provide to new businesses to test the feasibility of their idea. The £1000 grant was used by the pair to fund a website, and promote Shaky Jakes in the community.

We asked one of their many happy looking customers what they thought of Shaky Jakes, “I'm addicted already, me and my housemates are attempting to try them all, 4 down, many more to go!”

After receiving an update from the Shaky Jakes team, it seems that the next thing on the agenda is alcoholic versions of the much-loved milkshakes, something certain to capture the imaginations of the local residents, especially the students!

Another strong possibility for the future of Shaky Jakes is to open an additional shop, as Patrick and Katie look to extend the success that Shaky Jakes have had so far.
