Success Stories: Optima Semper

Leigh Woolard graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University in the summer of 2005 with a degree in Business Information Technology. He attended the annual Entrepreneurial Summer School 2006 organised by Business Start-Up @ Leeds Met where he acquired the practical information, advice and motivation needed to start a business.

Optima Semper is the search engine marketing company that Leigh started in August 2006. It is for small to medium sizes businesses (SMEs) and aims to create and manage clients marketing campaigns to effectively promote their products and services to their targeted audiences on the internet.

The core service is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) which is a technique of achieving high rankings relevant to the search term entered on search engines such as Google or Yahoo. Additional services are to provide online expertise, internet marketing services and website development strategies to increase the chance of client websites being found.

In February 2006, Leigh entered the Business Concept Competition, finishing second and receiving the runner up prize of £500.

Coming from an entrepreneurial background, Leigh has dreamt about starting his own business ever since leaving high school.


“Several members of my family have their own successful businesses including a successful international franchise….so I have seen the effort required to run a business successfully, the challenges and the rewards it can bring personally and financially”.


With this background combined with the expertise gained from the time spent with Business Start-Up, Optima Semper has expanded significantly. As they approach the end of their second year of trading, the company has moved into office space, Leigh has employed staff members, and the company now partner other web design agencies.
