Success Stories: GHG Design

Gemma Holmes, a final year IT Management for Business student took part on the Placement Year Entrepreneurship Scheme (PYES) run by Business Start-Up @ Leeds Met so she could develop her web design business, GHG Design.  The 12 month programme is available to Leeds Met students who would like to run their own business during their placement year and looking for an alternative to the traditional placement year.

Once enrolled on the scheme, Business Start-Up take on the role of your employer, creating a team to help and support you and your business, so that you’re free to try out your ideas and see if they work in a real business situation. During the course of the year, Gemma had access to all the Business Start-Up resources, including workshops, business advice, events, competitions and funding.

Trading since 2008, GHG Design includes tailor made web design, construction and development for small to medium sized businesses, Gemma says;

“Working in IT quite often means you are dealing with customers who know what they want, but don't know how to achieve the results. This quite often leads to customers being misled down routes that suit the pocket of the supplier, rather than the needs of the customer”.
GHG Design aims to specialise in working with young start-up businesses as Gemma understands their position having experienced it first hand, her business is young enough to be able to offer attractive yet realistic discounts to start-up companies.

“Our aim is to have a different approach to business. We are building a business based on trust and reliability. We want to listen, advise and share knowledge with our clients so the solution is exactly what they want but with the right development to back it. Developing web solutions and using them as a main factor in marketing is simple, but something only the top 1% of businesses understands”.

On completion of PYES, students will receive an accredited module.
