Introduction

Established in 2002, Business Start-Up @ Leeds Met, funded by Yorkshire Forward and the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF2), is a centre promoting innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship across the University.

We aim to raise awareness of entrepreneurship and provide practical support services to students and graduates who are considering self employment as a future career. Since our inception we have helped to create over 100 businesses.

We also recognise that self employment is not for everyone and so we aim to teach students enterprising and business skills which will allow them to act as ‘intrapreneurs’ within larger companies.

We offer a comprehensive range of services catering to students at each stage of the start-up process from “Idea” to “Lift-Off”.

Workshops discussing business ideas, motivation and planning guide students through the initial stages of start up during term time. Our annual Entrepreneurs Summer School (held in July each year) also provides a crash course to starting up.

These group sessions are followed up by individual needs assessments and referral to our in house Business Advisor. Once our young entrepreneurs are ready to start trading, they can then access mentors, proof of concept funding and book hot desks or office space at a Leeds Metropolitan University business incubator.
