Publicity for enterprising students'Edith', a short film about love, loss and romantic love and sex in old age, is the title of a gradation film being made by Northern Film School, BA (Hons) Film and Moving Image Production students. The film is being written, directed and produced by five third year students including producer, Kathryn Wilson and director, Ian Pinder. The students have secured some very useful publicity on the Yorkshire Evening Post website, in their search for a lead actor and sponsorship from local businesses.
Fowzia Fathima's Festival Sucesses and More
Fowzia Fathima’s, former Northern Film School Senior Lecturer in Cinematography, has been in touch with some exciting developments since her recent departure from the Film School. Firstly, Fowzia continues to build her film festival award collection with her first metro movie ‘M3V’ (2008), an experimental film, winning several awards during the 2009 film festival season.
A Masterclass in Short FilmmakingThe UK Jewish Film Festival, in association with the Northern Film School, present a masterclass in short filmmaking, with screenings of 'Sidney Turtlebaum' and 'Schlimazeltov!'. . The masterclass takes place on Wednesday 24 February, 10am - 1pm in the Electric Press Building, Room 209, 1 Millennium Square, Leeds, LS2 3AD. This masterclass is an opportunity to explore what makes a successful short film.
Sundance for Graduate's FilmA film written and directed by a Northern Film School alumnus will be screened in one of the world's most respected film festivals. Mohamed Al-Daradji, who graduated with an MA in Film and Moving Image Production from the Northern Film School, will see his film 'Son Of Babylon' shown as an entry in the 'World Cinema Dramatic Competition' as part of the Sundance Film Festival.
Art, Event, Performance presents PLAYBACKLeeds Met's - BA (Hons) Art, Event, Performance presents PLAYBACK, a documentary performance devised in collaboration with Alexander Kelly (Co-Artistic Director, Third Angel and Senior Lecturer, Contemporary Performing Arts). Playback takes place on Monday 14 December at 11.00am - 7.00pm and Tuesday 15 December at 10.00am - 6.00pm, in the exhibition area of Broadcasting Place (ground floor of A building).
Documentary HeavenNovember is always a time of the year to look forward to if you are a documentary filmmaker and this year proved no exception for students and staff of the Northern Film School. Ten Northern Film School students and three staff attended the 2009 Sheffield International Documentary Festival, which took place from 4 - 8 November 2009.
Northern Film School Student’s Advert Short-Listed for the OXO Factor CompetitionRoss Brandon, a current third year BA (Hons) Film and Moving Image Production student at the Northern Film School, has recently produced a 30 second advert for the OXO Factor Competition. Ross’ advert is one of five that has been short-listed for the final.
Northern Film School Showcase at Leeds International Film Festival 2009Northern Film School students showcased their films at Leeds International Film Festival on Wednesday 11th November at the Carriageworks Theatre. The films were screened to a packed house of guests including the filmmakers, staff, students, industry guests and members of the public. This year's screening was an exciting selection of recent short films produced by students at the Northern Film School including, drama, documentary, horror, animation, comedy and a music video.
Northern Film School Host Successful London Industry ScreeningThe Curzon Soho cinema on Shaftesbury Avenue, was the location for the first Northern Film School screening in London. Lecturers from the School and the student filmmakers, hosted industry professionals including agents, producers, filmmakers, colleagues from the National Film School, and other London film schools and alumni.
Alumnus' Second Feature Film Premiers at the Middle East International Film FestivalNorthern Film School alumnus Mohammed Al Daraji’s second feature film ‘Son of Babylon’ had its world premier at the Middle East International Film Festival in Abu Dhabi earlier this month.
Alumnus Daniel Lucchesi, wins Peoples’ Choice at this year’s Virgin Media Shorts AwardsBA (Hons) Film and Moving Image Production Alumnus Daniel Lucchesi, wins Peoples’ Choice at this year’s Virgin Media Shorts Awards. The film, a two minute comedy sketch entitled CGI-Brows, is a satirical mockumentary looking at how cinema’s latest technological breakthrough will literally change the face of the motion picture industry. Chris Pugh Wins an ACTS AwardThe School of Film, Television and Performing Arts is pleased to announce that Chris Pugh, Administrative Officer for the School, has won the award for Commitment at the 2009 Leeds Met ACTS (Attitude, Character and Talent) Awards.
Chris undertook extra work over the 0809 academic year and received this award in recognition of his commitment to the School and the University. Unfortunately Chris could not make it to the Award ceremony held in September but said “he was surprised and pleased to receive the award”. For more information go to, please click here Staff News - Martin John Harris Editing a New BBC2 Documentary SeriesMartin Harris, senior lecturer at the Northern Film School is working with documentary film maker Anna Hall (Edge of the City, St Hildas) on a new series for BLAST! FILMS and BBC2. ‘MUSLIM DRIVING SCHOOL’ will follow a number of British Muslim women learning to drive, doing what many of their sisters and relatives in some Muslim countries would never be allowed to do.
BA2 Films to be Shown in Royal Armouries ExhibitionsThe second year students on the BA (Hons) Film and Moving Image Production course, worked on a project run jointly by Leeds Met and the Royal Armouries during the 08/09 academic year, to create and produce a set of ten 3-minute films themed around conflict, war and peace. The films commissioned by the panel included drama, documentary and animation.
The collection of short films premiered at the Royal Armouries on Thursday 21 May 2009 to a packed house. The audience included film industry colleagues, students, friends, families, Leeds Met and Royal Armouries staff and the stars of the films themselves. ‘Make a Film in Day’ - A Northern Film School workshop at the Staff Development Festival 2009This year’s ‘Make a Film in a Day’, a workshop for the 2009 Leeds Met Staff Development Festival, organised and facilitated by Northern Film School was a great success. Twenty Leeds Met colleagues attended to find out some of the basics of filmmaking. They were split into three groups with the task of each making a short three minute film in one day, which were screened in the Electric Press screening room at the end of the session. Below is an extract from one of the participant’s blog about his experience on the day. “I showed up at the Northern Film School in the Electric Press building together with 19 other like-minded colleagues. First we were taught a few of the basics and terminology of film making. Then we were divided into three groups: each got a task to make a short 3 minute long film. |
